1. Find Great References to Get Inspiration
Before creating your own Reels, I highly recommend finding great Reels as references and browsing Instagram Reels to see what’s trending these days. If you already have your own clear ideas and specific plans for Reels, then all good, give them a try!
However, if you have ideas but aren’t sure how to turn them into great content, it’s a good idea to check out high-performing Reels and analyze the layout, visuals, audio, and text they use. Additionally, through this analysis, you’ll be able to identify current trends and see what types of content your target audience engages with the most.
First, you can choose the topic that you’re going to create content about. For example, let’s say you’re going to create Reels about your coffee experiences at a café. Then you can type keywords such as “coffee”, “coffee date” or “coffee vancouver” into the search bar and start browsing. When you find great, high-performing Reels, save them to your collections.
However, don’t forget this: you should not copy them exactly. Instead, use them as references to get inspiration and create your own content with your own unique ideas. This can help you come up with better and different content in your own style.
2. Build a Strong 3-Second Hook
When people encounter Reels, they often decide whether they want to keep watching within the first three seconds. That’s why building a strong 3-second hook is very important. Even if the content is well organized and provides useful information, if the hook isn’t strong enough, viewers may lose interest before they even get to the main content.
Therefore, think carefully about what kind of hook you’re going to use to grab viewers’ attention and encourage them to engage with your Reels within the first three to five seconds.
3. Align Your Audio, Visuals, and On-Screen Text
You need to make sure that your audio, visuals and on-screen text are aligned and relevant.
First of all, your audio should be trendy enough to feel familiar to viewers and appropriate for the concept of your Reel. Before creating or uploading a video, find the best audio for your content by testing several options and seeing which one fits your content the best.
When it comes to visuals, I recommend putting in effort and taking a close look at high-performing Reels to identify how they successfully engage their audience and how they create visually appealing content.
Pay attention to elements such as color tones, the combination of different videos or photos in one Reel, brightness, exposure, saturation, and the overall mood of the videos.
4. Stay Updated on the Latest Reel Trends
As I mentioned in the first section, if you’d like to create attractive and highly engaging Reels, you need to really know what the latest Reel trends are on Instagram. We know that it takes time, and sometimes it can be kind of annoying, but I’m sure it will be an effective shortcut to reach your goal and achieve higher engagement metrics.
When you have some downtime, open Instagram and simply browse the latest Reel trends and see what your target audience is interested in these days.
5. Add Clear Captions and a Specific Call to Action(CTA)
As for the last tip, a clear caption means that it should be appropriate for the concept of your content and include useful information or relatable sentences that can make people stay longer on your Reels.
When it comes to CTA (Call to Actions), a CTA in digital marketing is “A text, phrase, or button used in ads, emails, or websites to guide users toward a goal.” You need to make sure to add specific CTA to direct viewers to landing pages, such as your website or blog, and turn engagement into conversions.
My Experience of Changing My Strategy to Gain New Followers
In my experience, I was successfully gaining engagement from viewers, including views, likes, shares, and saves through viral and relatable Reels. However, I wasn’t gaining as many new followers as expected compared to the high engagement rate.
So I decided to change my strategy to give viewers something more valuable or useful that could grab their interest more, such as informational Reels with tips for improving English speaking skills and stories about my English-learning journey.
Eventually, my new strategy actually worked. Viewers started following me and reaching out to me to ask for tips on improving my English skills.
Basically, if you want to gain new followers through Reels, simply making relatable content isn’t enough. You need to give viewers a clear value proposition that encourages them to follow your account for future content. For example, you want them to think “Oh, I should follow this account for more useful information!”, or “This content really inspires me. I’m definitely following!”
So, don’t be afraid to experiment with different ideas, trends, and formats. Start applying these five tips to your next Reel and see what works best for your audience!
